Chapter Eight

Stir crazy. Those were the only words Gabby could use to describe her state. Brogan had been in town for less than twenty-four hours, and the proverbial door to the past she held under lock and key had been blown to smithereens. It wasn’t enough his scent filled the cabin. Every time she moved, her body ached in a deliciously wicked way, reminding her last night was more than a dream. It felt like her girly parts were starting a conga line while her heart played the death march.

Enough! Thinking all things Brogan started the walls closing in on her. Tired of being alone with her thoughts, she decided to head out. The day before, Ryker had sent everyone home, but so far today, there had been no news. Brogan would get his tail in a twist if she went outside, but he would get over it. He had been at Gee’s when she told Ryker she would go to Sarah and Embry’s place if she felt she needed to. She had mentioned she would go if she was scared to be alone, which wasn’t exactly the case. She simply needed to not be alone, needed a conversation focused on something other than her own personal drama.

After she dressed in a simple peasant dress and flip-flops, she followed the path up toward Sarah and Embry’s. Simply being outside in the fresh air helped her clear her head. Her focus shifted to listening to the sounds of the forest. Birds singing, squirrels barking in the trees. She kept a steady pace and reached the cabin in no time, climbed the stairs, and knocked on the door. Knocking again, she waited a few minutes but still no answer.

Sarah and Embry were newly mated. The idea that they were locked in each other’s arms and passionately unaware of visitors wasn’t that far-fetched. She should have thought before she interrupted them. Still, with everything going, they should have at least opened the door. Listening for a moment, she caught no sounds of movement or voices. Maybe they had gone into town. Town sounded perfect, everything she needed. People, voices, and Gee’s fried pickles everyone knew were the cure-all for everything.

Leaving their porch, she angled toward the shortcut to town, the path familiar to her. She hadn’t gone far when she caught the scent of Embry. Eager to catch up with him, she followed the scent. The last thing she wanted was another confrontation with Ryker or Brogan.

Her senses heightened when she veered off the path. A sense of unease slithered up her spine. The forest had gone eerily silent as she made her way down the valley. She had to twist and turn around the brush. Her mouth tasted of metal. There had to be a dead animal nearby. Disposing of it would be a perfect job for Brogan the next time she saw him, if she saw him. Cautiously she called out, “Embry? Sarah?”

She cursed as she crashed through two large bushes, stumbled over the roots, and landed on her hands and knees.
